Peggie Mattocks (Mama)
Born Peggie Spicer, she was first Major's teacher - then the love of his life. Together they purchased four tracts of land in 1931 and built a life on it, raising nine children and holding fast to the family creed: take care of the land, and the land will take care of you.
Major Mattocks (Papa)
Carpenter, logger, farmer, and patriarch. Major fought twice for this land - once at auction and once in the courts - and when a tornado took the family home, he rebuilt it with neighbors and friends. Everything standing here today began with him.
The Major Mattocks Real Estate Trust
The farm is held as an asset in the Major Mattocks Real Estate Trust, currently managed by three trustees on behalf of 42 direct beneficiaries and the family's future generations. From Major and Peggie's nine children, 312 known descendants have grown - educators, lawyers, military veterans, government officials, and a Special Assistant to the President of the United States.
